The Hidden Almanac has a very important announcement about tonight, the night of the Hunter’s Moon. There are also bulbs.

Be Safe, and Stay Indoors.

Welcome to…whatever Almanac it is today, I’m Reverend Mord.

Today is October 8th, 2014.

It is the Hunter’s Moon tonight. A hunter’s moon traditionally has bright moonlight until dawn for several consecutive nights, owing to the time of moonrise. There are those who will tell you that the name comes because the moonlight allows hunters to see their quarry more clearly at night.

Those people are wrong. What is hunting tonight does not require moonlight.

We at the Hidden Almanac suggest that you stay indoors. If you have access to a mandrake root, place it outside the door. Lock the door. Lock the windows. Do not look through the windows. Eye contact with the denizens of the Hunter’s Moon is not recommended.

If the mandrake root is gone in the morning, we suggest that you offer thanks to the mandrake’s spirit and whatever deity or saints you prefer to worship. If you do not have a saint of preference, Saint Cullen the Archer and the Madonna of Leaves would both be excellent choices.

The mandrake may return at some point, possibly in dreams or when you are on your deathbed. You owe it. It will ask you for something, and if it is within your power, we suggest that you grant it. It will probably seem to be an inconsequential favor. That is fine. Whatever it asks for is a great deal less than what you would lose if the mandrake had not taken your place on the night of the Hunter’s Moon.

This has been a public service announcement. Also, you should probably plant daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips out, while the weather is nice.

The Hidden Almanac is brought to you by Red Wombat Fetch Company, purveyors of fine and identical doppelgangers. Red Wombat --- “We Look Exactly Like Tea.”

Also brought to you by Big Bad Bulbs, Inc. Buy the biggest and baddest tulip bulbs on the market! They’re enormous! They don’t play by the rules! They’ll sprout when they feel like it! Plant them and stand back!

That’s the Hidden Almanac for October 8th, 2014. Be safe, and stay indoors.
