Welcome to the Hidden Almanac, I’m Reverend Mord.

Today is December 24th, 2014.

It is the eve of Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, the Birth of the Unconquered Sun.

Historically, very little ever gets done today, other than frantic shopping and attempts to wrap up vital bits of work before the holiday begins. Occasionally there are murders and snowstorms and so forth.

It was one such storm that paralyzed the city for days in 1859, leading to chaos, famine, and in one tenement building, cannibalism. When the snow finally melted, the residents of the Victor Building were found to have eaten two postal workers and a dogwalker. The building was condemned, as were the residents.

It is the Feast Day of the Dying Winter. It will have its back broken tomorrow by the Unconquered Sun. Modern holiday pageants have toned down what was once an extremely bloody holiday, but we retain some of the trappings, like the combination of red and white for blood and snow. In ancient days, this feast corresponded more closely to the solstice, but has become fixed on the 24th in these more civilized times.

In the garden, the trees are strung with feeder ornaments, consisting of pinecones laden with suet and peanut butter. George has been given all the Cheetos he desires and one of the interns will be staying up to play cards with him so that he is not lonely. We are not sure if George understands cards, but he seems to enjoy looking at the pictures.

The Hidden Almanac is brought to you by Red Wombat Tea Company, purveyors of fine and inaccessible teas. Red Wombat --- “We Dig Tea.”

From all of us here at the Hidden Almanac, we wish you a joyous midwinter, whatever your faith.

That’s the Hidden Almanac for December 5th, 2014. Be safe, and stay out of trouble.
