Today is the day that the Abbot of the Abbey of the Mountain Kingdom was appointed, with much political upheaval. It is the Feast Day of St. John of Ladolf, and in the garden, there is Pastor Drom.

Be Safe, and Stay Out of Trouble.

Welcome to the Hidden Almanac, I’m Reverend Mord.

Today is February 20th, 2015.

It was on this day in 1393 that political forces battling over appointment of the head abbot of the Abbey of the Mountain Kingdom turned to bloodshed. The Abbey was rich and powerful and the head abbot’s political leanings would influence the flow of commerce in the region for decades. The king favored one candidate, the Pope another. The final decision lay in the hands of the local vicar John of Ladolf, who confirmed the papal candidate, against the wishes of the king.

John was promptly murdered on the king’s orders, and his body thrown into the river. He was named a martyr, but as the abbot had been legally confirmed, the king had no legal recourse. Murdering the abbot would have earned the disfavor of the abbey and lost the Mountain Kingdom a great deal of money, and so the decision stood. Fall-out from this political upheaval was wide-reaching and eventually led, in a roundabout fashion, to several assassinations, the reign of the Librarian Prince, and the invention of grape-flavored licorice.

It is the Feast Day of …oh, lord.

PD: Hi, everybody! I’m Pastor Drom!

RM: What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be keeping the protesters from stepping on things?

PD: I need to borrow your crow.

RM: What? George? No! You can’t borrow him. He’s very sensitive. And he lives here.

PD: I’ll give him back…

RM: Absolutely not! And what do you want with George anyway?

PD: I need a feather. One ought to do it.

RM: Drom, are you doing black magic? That’s strictly forbidden for miracle workers. You’ll get written up.

PD: If by ‘black magic’ you mean sending the feather in for DNA testing to try and determine George’s exact species, then…maybe.

RM: I’m not sure that’s a good idea…

PD: Where’s my million dollars, Mord?!

RM: …fine. But be gentle. He’s a sensitive crow.

PD: Who’s a good crow? Are you a good crow? I bet you’re the bestest crow ever…
