Summary[]

Today we remember the burning of the Sacred Order of Bull Moose Men Lodge #7. We also remember an unfortunate food additive. It is the Feast Day of St. Edwin, and in the garden, there are warblers.

Welcome to the Hidden Almanac, I’m Reverend Mord.

Today is May 18th, 2015.

It was on this day in 1973 that a series of mysterious fires culminated in the burning of the #7 Lodge of the Sacred Order of Bull Moose Men. The fires had no apparent cause, nor were the targets linked in any way that investigators could find. The Lodge burned almost to the ground, revealing the dread secrets kept in the basement (which are, admittedly, an open secret in the city.) As joining the lodge is, as always, strictly voluntary, and the Bull Moose lawyers are ancient and highly skilled, the Order received a slap on the wrist and an injunction to not do that any more where anybody could see them.

The source of the fires were eventually traced to a stolen shipment of Yellow Dye Z-10, banned for causing erratic pyrokinesis in subjects. College students had been cutting LSD with it, and the results were tragic and predictable. The students were sent to hospitals to be detoxed, and the source of the shipment of Z-10 was subject to government investigation.

It is the Feast Day of Saint Edwin the Sanguine. Edwin was a monk at the Monastery of Saint Crocuta, during the barbarian assault of 1214. Saint Andrei, the vampire saint, stood off the invaders singlehandedly, thanks to the monks organizing blood drives to keep him fed during a two week siege. St. Edwin was tasked with delivering the blood to St. Andrei. Even the most penitent and religious vampire becomes…erratic…when feeding and so St. Edwin approached with caution. He stated in his account of the siege that Andrei was entirely polite and said grace before each meal, except once, when he had had a particularly unpleasant night of battle. Thought he was circumspect in the wording, it appears that Andrei attacked him, but fortunately St. Edwin had a sheepskin bladder of blood wrapped around his neck in case of emergency, and so was saved. Andrei was highly contrite and was the primary campaigner, nearly two hundred years later, to see St. Edwin canonized.

In the garden, the warbler migration is coming through. This is an excellent time to provide water in the form of drips and birdbaths, and to keep feeders filled. While many birds feed most heavily on insects while feeding nestlings, seeds are still valuable for adults. Consider a mealworm feeder as well.
