Welcome to the Hidden Almanac, I’m Reverend Mord

Today is February 10th, 2016.

It is the anniversary, in the time before time, of the ascension of the god Mockingbird-on-the-Left, who came from the mountains to the south of the Glass Wastes and stole fire from the hearth of heaven. Mockingbird-on-the-Left delivered fire to humankind, but having tasted the fire herself, she could not remain among mortals. She ascended to heaven, saying that she would accept any punishment the gods meted out, if she only she was allowed to remain among those who did not age. For her crime, Mockingbird-on-the-Left was stripped of her voice, and since that day, only the male mockingbird sings and only in the voices of other birds. But for her service in saving humankind from the cold, the gods most sympathetic to men asked her to be their messenger and gave her wings of flame. Mockingbird-on-the-Left can sometimes be seen passing through the skies high over earth, trailing fire, as she goes about the business of the gods.

And it was on this day in 1848 that water was observed flowing uphill in a small hamlet some forty miles outside of Troyzantium. Many scientists came out in the days that followed to observe the phenomenon. It was even more peculiar than usual, given that most of the surrounding water was frozen solid, since it was mid-February. This state of affairs persisted for seven days, whereupon the laws of physics re-exerted themselves and the water flowed downhill and then froze. A number of explanations were put forward, all of them wrong.

It is the Feast Day of St. Shan the Heretic, who was burned at the stake. St. Shan wrote extensively criticizing Church doctrine, which was a dangerous thing to do in 945 AD. Centuries later, his surviving writings came to light and it was discovered that by modern standards, he had been quite progressive and his primary heresies included things like suggesting that Popes could be women. He was canonized by the Shepherd Pope, who said that he had stood as the conscience of the Church in less civilized age, and for that, deserved recognition.

In the garden, all things wait for spring, including the gardener.
