Hummingbirds are a common sight in the city where the Hidden Almanac is recorded, and feature in much of its history.

  • Saint Calliope takes the form of a hummingbird-headed man or as a torso with a hummingbird hovering in the space that would have been occupied by the head. He is believed to be related to an incident in the eighth year of the reign of the Emperor Lamperius who was pricked by a rosebush in the imperial pleasure gardens and then attacked by a hummingbird dwelling in the rosebush.   • The inventor Saul Rothchilde powered his famous flying machine with two thousand and eighty-four individual hummingbird hearts, which were preserved by thaumaturgical means. (Episode 5)
