Maxwell Alonzo painted cowboys, horses, and associated landscapes. His work was intensely popular as covers to a certain sort of book, featuring wild horses, manly men, and excessive gunslinging, but eventually fell out of favor. Alonzo reinvented his career by painting horses in vivid shades of violet and orange on backgrounds of stylized clouds, and achieved some small fame. He passed away in 1986, leaving behind a foundation that gives scholarships to young and disadvantaged illustrators.
