December 9 is the Feast Day of Tattie-Bogles. This is an ancient word for scarecrows and it is a likewise ancient feast day. The scarecrows that had served throughout the year are taken down now and sat at a table where they are given an honorary meal of beer and rye bread as thanks for their service. This old custom is viewed as a reward that Tattie Bogles have earned rather than as appeasement to keep something bad from happening. Though with scarecrows, one is never entirely certain.
